Effectiveness of Home Grown Vegetable Program for improve Quality of life based on Elderly Needs

Abstract

Introduction: Nowadays, the elderly are noted for their longevity, resulting in a decrease of quality of life (QOL) of the elderly. This would attribute to many factors. Gardening is an activity which would heal and rejuvenate their physical and mental states of the elderly in the community.

Research objectives: To examine the effectiveness of Home Grown Vegetable program for changing QOL among elderly based on their needs.

Researchmethodology: This quasi-experimental study used a two-group pretest and posttest design and were measured 2 times at baseline, and follow-up at the 8th week after intervention completed. Participants consisted of 108 elderly people aged 60-80 years old living  in Chiang Klang District, Nan Province. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit the participants. Moreover, 54 participants were assigned to an intervention group and 54 to a control group. The intervention group received eight weeks of a Home Grown Vegetable intervention, whereas the control group lived with their daily routine.  Data were collected using a personal information interview form, and QOL was assessed using   WHOQOL-BREF-THAI. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and independent sample t–test.

Results: The findings revealed that at follow-up, between-group significant difference of QOL was found (t = 3.282, p-value <0.001).  Also, the intervention group had a higher mean score of QOL than the control group (96.04%, 91.33%, respectively). To compare each dimension of QOL in the intervention group at follow-up, it was found that the QOL score increased in all 4 dimensions.

Conclusions: The Home Grown Vegetable (HGV) program was effective in improving the QOL of the elderly in the community.

Implications:The local government organization should promote the implementation of HGV program activities. This should be scaling up to be a community policy to promote QOL among the elderly. Expansion of the implementation of HGV to other groups is recommended.
