A Study of Guidelines for Volunteer Development Being Elderly Caregiver by Community: A Focused Ethnography

Abstract

Introduction: A volunteer development for being elderly caregivers is considered a community management by developing volunteer for the elderly care. Therefore, a study of volunteer development guidelines would be able to effectively and continually help workforce of elderly caring.

Research objective: This study aimed to explore guidelines and factors affecting volunteer development for being elderly caregivers in community.

Research methodology: The study employed a focused ethnographic design. A purposive sampling technique was used to recruit 50 elderly caring volunteers, and 20 elderly and family members. Data were collected using observations, in-depth interviews, and focus groups discussion. Data were analyzed using content analysis.

Results: Results revealed that guidelines for volunteer development for being elderly caregiver by community involved 7 approaches: 1) creating volunteer opportunities for being elderly caregiver; 2) improving capacity of elderly caregiving volunteers;  3) team building and volunteer network for elderly caring; 4) developing and using elderly population data to improve elderly caregiving volunteers; 5) supporting from organization to facilitate and reinforce volunteers’ work; 6) creating rules and agreement for volunteers and involved persons in the community regarding a continuum of care for elderly; and 7) creating a continuous learning for volunteers and involved persons in the community  regarding a continuum of care for elderly using factors including humans, method, budget and resources, and data. These are the support mechanisms for developing caregivers of elderly people in community.

Conclusions: Findings of the study indicated guidelines and factors affecting volunteer development for being elderly caregiver by community to meet the elderly needs.

Implications: Findings of the study provide recommendations for the community to develop volunteer workforce to meet elderly needs and culture of generosity for elderly care. Stakeholders include local government officials, village headmen, health service units, and people in the community.
