Abstract

Introduction: Heart failure is a chronic disease and a major cause of mortality in a public healthcare system worldwide. Moreover, the evidences indicate the rising of new heart failure patients annually.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of self-management program on sodium consumption restriction behaviors among heart failure patients.

Methodology: The quasi-experimental study used a two group pre-test post-test design. Sample included 48 heart failure male and female patients aged 30-59 years. They have been diagnosed and treated by the physicians for at least 6 months with a NYHA Class I-III.   They were recruited from a heart failure clinic of the outpatient department, the General Police Hospital. Then, 24 participants were assigned to an experimental group and 24 to a comparison group. The control group received conventional care while the experimental group attended the four weeks of self-management program, which included 6 steps of core self-management skills. Data were collected using demographic characteristic and sodium consumption questionnaire. Findings were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, independent sample t-test, and paired sample t-test.

Results: Results revealed that in the experimental group, mean scores of sodium consumption restriction behaviors among heart failure patients were significantly higher than the comparison group (p<.05). At follow-up, mean score of the experimental group was statistically significantly higher than at base line mean score (p<.05).

Conclusions: Self-management program developed from the concept of Lorig and Holman (2003) has resulted in a positive change in sodium consumption restriction behaviors among heart failure patients.

Implications: Health care sectors can apply this program to care for heart failure patients to prevent complications and disease relapse, and promote better quality of life.
