Introduction: Problem-based learning (PBL) is a teaching method which allows learners to self-directed learning and develop critical thinking.
Research objectives: The study aimed to examine the effects of problem-based teaching model using electronic media on the ability of analytical thinking and opinion among the 3rd year nursing students.
Research methodology: This quasi-experimental study used a one-group pretest and posttest design. Eighty-five nursing students from Faculty of Nursing Suan Dusit University participated in the study. All of them registered in Primary Medical Care (PMC) course. Students studied via using the Internet for six weeks. Research instruments were the ability of analytical thinking test, and questionnaire regarding opinions in the usage of electronic media-based teaching model. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and T-test.
Results: 1. At follow-up, mean score of the ability of analytical thinking score was significantly higher than baseline (t = -20.01, p = .00). 2. The students’ opinion towards teaching activities using electronic media, in which the situations given to encourage students to use their existing knowledge, was at a high level (mean= 4.69, SD = 0.59)
Conclusions: The results of the study showed that a problem-based teaching model using electronic media can enhance the ability of analytical thinking in nursing students.
Implications: The learning management for PBL consisted of continuous learning activities to improve critical thinking leading to lifelong learning.
