Designing Program for Health Behavior Modification: Intervention Mapping
Keywords:
Intervention Mapping, health behavior modification, program designAbstract
Introduction: To implement effective health behavior change interventions, the vital process is to systematically and logically integrate evidence-based health behavior change and behavioral theory into the interventions.
Objective: This scholarly article aimed to propose a concept and apply the Intervention Mapping (IM) in planning and designing a health behavior modification program.
Key issue: IM is a protocol based on a logical plan and design, and ecological approach involving the consideration of causal factors of behavioral change at all levels. It encompasses six fundamental steps including: 1) conducting a need assessment or problem analysis, 2) creating matrices of change to define objectives based on the determinants, 3) selecting theory-based intervention methods and practical strategies, 4) program development, 5) generating an adoption and implementation plan, and 6) generating an evaluation plan. By completing all these six steps, a blueprint for implementing health promotion program is used. The IM has been successfully applied to develop various health promotion and education interventions in many countries.
Conclusions: Therefore, health educator and promoter can use this model to plan and design health behavior modification program. People or targeted groups participating in the program would achieve desirable health behaviors and then leading to healthy life.
Implications: The proposed model can be further developed under research process or applied in health promotion and health education program.
