The Effects of the Interprofessional Education Program on Attitudes towards Multidisciplinary Work among Students of Allied Health Science Programs

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare attitudes towards multidisciplinary work before and after participating in the interprofessional education program of students of Allied Health Science Programs. The samples consisted of students of the Bachelor of Nursing Programs of Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Buddhachinnaraj and, Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Uttaradit, and students of the Bachelor of Public Health Program and the Thai Traditional Medicine Program at Sirindhorn College of Public Health Phitsanulok Province, in the academic year 2019 (n=47). The research instruments consisted of 1) the interprofessional education program, 2) the Interprofessional Attitudes Scale: IPAS of Norris et al. (2015). Data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test.
The results of the study showed that after participating in the interprofessional education program, the students had statistically significant higher overall attitudes scores regarding multidisciplinary work than those before participating in the program (p <.001). When considering in each aspect, the results showed that the attitude mean scores in all aspects were statistically significantly higher than those before participating in the program. The increasing scores of each dimension were ordered as followed: 1) patient centered, 2) teamwork, role, and responsibility, 3) respect for diversity of culture and morality 4) bias with multidisciplinary team, and 5) community-centered, respectively (p <.001). The interprofessional education program can be applied for all students of Allied Health Science programs and also expand this program for students in other programs, such as physician, pharmacist, and physical therapist students so that they can better learn together.
