Multidisciplinary team is transformational leader in primary healthcare system which requires knowledge and teamwork skills as well as realizing the value of oneself and others. These will help team members to be able to appropriately provide modern healthcare service to relevant context of the community. This qualitative study aimed to examine experience of being change agent in multidisciplinary team after finishing a transformational leadership development project. The training project consisted of 2 phases. In phase 1, a training course was held from January to March 2019. It was 4-day course; and 3 classes. There were 20 teams each class. The 3-person team comprised of doctor, nurse, and public health technical officer. In phase 2, reflective course was held for 2 days (22nd–23rd April, 2019). There were 24 teams passing from phase 1 and were selected by the Chief of Health Region to present the progression of service models of the primary care clinic. The teams were asked to participate in the study. There were 17 multidisciplinary teams (51 participants including family doctors, nurses, and public health technical officer) and they volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected from May to August 2019 using focus group discussions with the guideline at the primary care unit of each team. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis.
Results showed that the participants described three aspects of experiences: 1) experience of “individual change” including person, team, and network; 2) experience of changing the work itself; and 3) experience of changing the service model in primary health care system. In conclusion, the course organizer has the directions to develop the transformational leadership curriculum in primary healthcare system. As a result, the multidisciplinary team would be encouraged to be a change agent to gradually improve individuals, others, and their job duty.
