Abstract

It is recognized that the elderly people are at high risk of mental health problems. Mental Health promotion is a concept that can reduce such risks. This quasi-experimental study was designed to examine the effects of a mental health promotion program on the mental health status among elderly people. To be eligible for the study, the participant had to meet the following criteria: 1) be 60 years of age or older; 2) possess good self-help; 3) no severe communicable diseases or movement disabilities; 4) be fluent in Thai; and 5) have a willing to participate in the study. There were 60 participants in the study. Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=30) and control group (n=30). The experimental group received the mental health promotion program. This program was developed using 3 concepts: the concept of creating happiness from Dhamma principles, the concept of creating psychological well-being, and the concept of holistic health care. The program consisted of 8 weekly sessions (90 minutes for each) over a period of 8 consecutive weeks, while the control group received regular care activities. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and t-test. Research findings were as follows: 1) After participating in the mental health promotion program, post-test mean score (M = 167.40, SD = 13.09) for the mental health of the experimental group were statistically higher than pre-test score (M = 154.40, SD = 14.13) (p<.001); 2) Mean difference score for the mental health of theexperimentalgroupbetweenpre-testandpost-test( =13.54,SD=13.80)weresignificantlyhigher than those of the control group ( =2.17, SD = 1.04) (p<.001). Research findings indicated that the mental health promotion program would potentially enhance the mental health status among elderly people. Longitudinal study is needed to investigate the sustainability of mental health status among elderly people.
