Health Literacy Scale developed by the Health Education Division, Department of Health Service Support was used to measure health literacy. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and to compare mean difference of health literacy among the first- to fourth- year nursing students by using One-Way ANOVA and Scheffe statistics.
The result found that the fourth year nursing students had the highest mean score of health literacy. Mean score of overall health literacy of students from year 1 to 4 was 91.92, 93.03, 93.13, 97.91, respectively. The level of health outcome of the first- to fourth- year nursing students was 25.67, 25.03, 23.72, 25.40, respectively. Basic level, interactive level, and critical level of health literacy of each year nursing students was reported at moderate level. Overall health literacy compared among the first- to fourth- year students was statistical difference (p < .05). When comparing difference among parts of health literacy, it indicated that Part 1: Health related knowledge, Part 2: Access to health related information and service, Part 3: Communication to enhance health expertise, and Part 5: Media and information literacy to promote health of the students in each year differed with statistical significance (p < .05).
The result from post hoc analysis showed that health literacy of the first year nursing students was difference from the fourth year students with statistical significance (p < .05). Therefore, health literacy competencies of nursing students in each year should be identified clearly and comprehensive program to achieve those competencies should be integrated in the nursing curriculum.
