The Effects of an Education Program Promoting Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support on Knowledge and Skills of Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support of Middle School Students

Abstract

          The quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of the basic cardiopulmonary life support training program on knowledge and skills related to basic cardiopulmonary life support of middle school students. The sample was 250 middle school students who were studying at Sri-Ayutthaya School between April to June 20. Sixty students were randomly assigned into the experimental and control groups by using a match-paired technique for grade, gender, age, and experience on basic cardiopulmonary life support, and grade point average, 30 subjects per group. The experimental group received the education program promoting basic cardiopulmonary life support developed based on the concepts of perceived self-efficacy, reinforcement, and social support. Their knowledge and skills about basic cardiopulmonary life support were measured by using the basic cardiopulmonary life support knowledge questionnaire, the knowledge of basic cardiopulmonary life support skills questionnaire, and the skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support questionnaire, with reliability of 0.74. 0.81, and 0.72, respectively. Data regarding demographic characteristics of the subjects were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, and mean scores of knowledge and knowledge of skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support, and skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support within groups were compared by using the paired t-test, while the independent t-test was used to compare the mean scores of knowledge and knowledge of skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support and skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support between groups.

The findings revealed that:

  1. After the experiment, the mean score of knowledge of basic cardiopulmonary life support of the experimental group (mean = 10.43, SD = 2.38) was higher than that obtained before the experiment (mean = 7.53, SD = 2.22) with statistical significance (t = 39.46, df = 29, p-value = .000). Moreover, their mean score of knowledge of skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support after the experiment (mean = 10.43, SD = 2.38) was higher than that obtained before the experiment (mean = 7.47; SD = 2.22) with statistical significance (t = 50.80, df = 29, p-value = .000). Finally, their mean score of skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support after the experiment (mean = 6.87, SD = 1.43) was higher than that obtained before the experiment (mean = 0.53, SD = 0.77) with statistical significance (p-value = .000).
  2. The mean score of knowledge of basic cardiopulmonary life support after the experiment of the experimental subjects (mean = 10.43, SD = 2.38) was higher than that of the control subjects (mean = 7.57, SD = 2.31) with statistical significance (t = 4.72, df = 58, p-value = .000). In addition, their mean score of knowledge of skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support after the experiment (mean = 10.43, SD = 2.38) was higher than that of the control subjects (mean = 7.63, SD = 2.39) with statistical significance (t = 4.530, df = 58, p-value = .000). Finally, their mean score of skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support after the experiment (mean = 6.87, SD = 1.43) was higher than that of the control subjects (mean = 0.67, SD = 1.09) with statistical significance (p-value = .000).

Based on the study findings, it could be concluded that the education program promoting basic cardiopulmonary life support could increase knowledge and skills of basic cardiopulmonary life support of junior high school students. Therefore, the program should be continuously implemented on a yearly basis and should be expanded to other groups of secondary school students.
