Psychological Well- Being of Adolescence in Broken Family: Descriptive Phenomenology

Abstract

Currently, social situation has changed in various aspects resulting in a higher separation rate of couple in every society. Children from that family must live in a broken home context and developing psychological distress, unavoidably. Therefore, it is necessary to study about perception and satisfaction in their life or psychological well-being of this population especially in a period of adolescence. This descriptive phenomenology qualitative research study guided by Husserl’s approach1 was conducted to describe the psychological well-being of adolescent in broken family. Informants were 50 adolescents with broken family in Mahasarakham province who were willing to participate in this study. In-depth interviews and focus group discussion were performed to collect data.

The results from content analysis based on Colaizi’s guidelines 9 revealed four major themes: 1) self-acceptance which was main component of psychological well-being, 2) relation with others, 3) environmental mastery, and 4) purpose in life. Research results can be utilized as a foundation knowledge for taking care of adolescent with broken family and further research.
