The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of self-care behavior promotion program to alleviate the severity of side effects of the chemotherapy in cancer patients. This study was guided by theory of health promotion planning model. Quasi-experimental design and one group pretest - posttest design was used in the study. The sample of the study was 40 cancer patients aged 18-70 years undertaken the chemotherapy at Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, Directorate of Medical Services, Royal Thai Air Force. The sample received the self-care behavior promotion program. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Inferential statistics were also used to compare the different outcomes between pre- and post-interventions through paired sample t-test.
The results of this study are as follows: By comparing mean scores on the severity of side effects of the chemotherapy in cancer patients between pre-intervention and post-intervention (2 weeks), mean scores on nausea, anorexia, and fatigue at post-intervention were statistically significantly lower than pre-intervention (p<.001). Mean score on mouth ulcers at post-intervention was statistically insignificantly lower than pre-intervention (p < .05; t=0.22). By comparing mean scores of severity of side effects of the chemotherapy in cancer patients between post-intervention (2 weeks) and post-intervention (4 weeks), mean scores on anorexia and fatigue at post-intervention (4 weeks) were statistically significantly lower than post-intervention (2 weeks) (p<0.001). Mean scores on nausea and mouth ulcers at post-intervention (4 weeks) were statistically insignificantly lower than post-intervention (2 weeks) (p < .05). Findings implied that the self-care behavior promotion program was effective to alleviate the severity of side effects of the chemotherapy in cancer patients.
