Effects of the Self-efficacy and Social Support Enhancement Program by Pharmacists through Line Application on Antiretroviral Adherence of HIV / AIDS Patients in Hua Hin Hospital

Abstract
Objective: To determine the effects of Self-efficacy and Social Support Enhancement Program by Pharmacists through Line Application (SSPLA) on antiretroviral adherence and patient satisfaction towards SSPLA. Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial conducted in HIV/AIDS patients receiving antiretroviral drugs from the HIV/AIDS Clinic, Hua Hin Hospital continuously for at least 6 months with viral load ≥ 50 copies/ml but not more than 1,000 copies/ml, having antiretroviral adherence less than 95% at least once in the past 6 months and having a mobile with the LINE application. Subjects were randomized into 2 groups i.e., 17 patients in study group individually received SSPLA for 8 weeks, and 17 patients in control group receiving usual care. They all were followed up 3 times at weeks 1, 4 and 8. Results: Score on antiretroviral adherence assessed by pill count and the MTB-Thai questionnaire in study group at week 1 were 86.24±9.98 (out of 100) and 19.94±2.49 (out of 24), respectively, while those at week 4 were 93.12±4.01 and 22.06±1.52, respectively, and those at week 8 were 98.94±1.71 and 23.53±0.51, respectively. These two outcomes in study group were significantly higher than those of the control group at week 4 and at week 8 (P<0.05). 52.9% of patients receiving SSPLA had a high level of satisfaction. Conclusion: SSPLA developed in the study significantly increased antiretroviral adherence. Patients receiving SSPLA were highly satisfied with the intervention.
