Abstract
Objectives: To assess product health literacy of public in Khlong Sam Wa district and determine its association with appropriate consumption of health products. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study recruited 400 samples by accidental sampling method from general population in 5 sub-districts of Khlong Sam Wa district, Bangkok. The study employed self-administered questionnaire to collect personal information, health product literacy, and appropriate consumption of health products during January 15, 2020 to April 30, 2020. Associations between these two variables were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Results: Most of study samples were female (62.5%) with an average age of 33 ± 11.14 years. More than half of them (53.2%) aged from 20 to 39 years. Income of most subjects was over 10,000 to 15,000 baht (43.8%). One-fourth had insufficient income (25.0%). Regularly used health products were food (63.5%), medicine (50.2%), and cosmetics (44.0%). Approximately 7.5% had ever experienced harm caused by health products. When analyzing the relationship of all 6 dimensions of health product literacy and consumption behavior controlling for personal factors, 4 dimensions were statistically significant associated with consumption behavior including knowledge and understanding about health products (Adj. OR 10.90; 95%CI: 1.96-60.68), self-management of health products (Adj. OR 4.84; 95%CI: 2.40-9.76), media and information literacy regarding health products (Adj. OR 3.35; 95%CI: 1.16-9.66), and decision making on selection of health products (Adj. OR 6.02; 95%CI: 2.84-12.79). Conclusions: According to a positive relationship between health literacy in 4 aspects and appropriate consumption of health products, the promotion of health product literacy is important for improving appropriate consumption of health products among public, leading to safe use of health products. In addition, information provided in the study can be utilized to direct the development of surveillance system for consumption of health products.
