Abstract
Objectives: To study the prevalence of depression and associated psychosocial factors among senior high school students.
Material and Methods: One-thousand and seven hundred students from ten public schools in the Bangkok Metropolis were recruited by stratified random sampling. The instrument was the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D), Thai version.
Results: The study revealed that 17.4% of the sample had significant depressive symptoms (total CES-D score > 22). Many psychosocial stressors were found to be associated with depression such as age, school achievement, parentsû marital status, economic status,
relationship with parents, parentsû mental health, loss events, relationship with siblings and relationship with peers. By logistic regression analysis, the significant predictors of depression
were GPA below 2.00, financial problems, poor relationship with mother, mother had mental health problems, loss events and poor peer relationship (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Depression was an important mental health problem in senior high school students. Intervention strategies such as counseling programs for students, educational programs for teachers on adolescent depressive symptoms and strengthen families are
mandatory in reducing the magnitude of the depression.
