Prevalence and Factor Relating to Depression of Junior High School Students in Nam Phong District Khon Kaen Province

Abstract
Objective : To study the prevalence and related factors of depression among junior high school students in Nam Phong District Khon Kaen Province
Method : This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. The subjects were 357 junior high school students selected by a systematic random sampling. Data were collected using the Thai version of the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), and Stress assessment (ST-5) of the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health, and questionnaires developed by the researcher from the literature review. The quality of instruments was assessing by Indexes of item-objective congruence (IOC) was 0.96. Factors associated with depression were analyzed by multiple logistic regression statistics and presented by adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval (95%CI)
Results : The subjects’ mean age were 13.94 years (S.D. 0.82), 59.73% were female. The prevalence of depression was found to be 41.74% (149 students). The associated factors with statistical significance were not satisfied with their appearance (adjusted OR = 1.97, 95% CI = 1.09-3.57), family income insufficiency (adjusted OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 1.18-3.92), history of sexual abuse (adjusted OR = 6.65, 95% CI = 1.66-26.65), number of close friends less than 2 persons (adjusted OR = 3.98, 95% CI = 2.09-7.59), and moderate stress level or higher (adjusted OR = 7.70, 95% CI = 4.52-13.12)
Conclusion : Nearly half of high school students had depression and the associated factors were unsatisfied with their appearance, insufficiency parents family incomes, history of sexual abuse, haing fewer close friends, and high stress. Therefore, collaboration among teachers, and mental health care providers is needed to establish depression surveillance system in the schools.
