Intradialytic Parenteral Nutrition
Main Article Content
Abstract
Patients with end-stage kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis are at an increased risk of morbidity and mortality, which is closely associated with altered nutritional status and the development of protein-energy wasting. Although nutritional counseling and oral nutritional supplements are primary interventions, they may not always be sufficient to improve nutritional status. As a result, intradialytic parenteral nutrition (IDPN) has emerged as a promising alternative to support nutritional needs. Although studies indicate that IDPN can improve nutritional parameters—such as serum protein levels, body weight, and overall quality of life—robust evidence on clinical outcomes, such as hospitalization or mortality, remains limited. This article aims to review the literature on IDPN, including indications for use, outcomes, IDPN composition, and assessment of clinical response, to enhance utilization and develop effective clinical recommendations to optimize nutritional support for hemodialysis patients.
