Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study is a quasi-experimental research. The objectives of this study was to study the effects of family participation program in medication management on drug consumption behavior and blood pressure in patients with hypertension. The subjects were 66 families of hypertension patients by taking the test period of 12 weeks. They were divided into two groups, each group 33 families. The control group received routine nursing care. The experimental group received a family participation program in drug management. This program consisted of 4 steps: 1) decision making, 2) implementation, 3) benefits, and 4) evaluation. Data were collected by instrument: the drug consumption behavior questionnaire. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-tests).

The results of the experimental group showed that the family participation program in medication management on drug in high blood pressure in patients had better the drug consumption behavior and lower blood pressure values. The overall mean score of the drug consumption behavior in the experimental group was statistically significant higher than those mean scores of before receiving the program p < .01 Furthermore, the overall mean score of the systolic blood pressure in the experimental group was statistically significant decrease than those mean scores of before receiving the program p < .01. and the diastolic blood pressure in the experimental group was statistically significant decrease than those mean scores of before receiving the program p < .01

Suggestions of family participation program in drug management resulted in patients with hypertension having better medication behavior and lowering blood pressure values. The results of this study can be used as a guideline to support the family participation program in medication management for patients with other chronic diseases. In order to increase the efficiency of taking appropriate medication care
