ABSTRACT
Obesity in school-aged children is a global challenge in healthcare management. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study, a two-group, pre-test/post-test design, was to examine the effects of a planned behavior program on the sedentary behavior of late primary school-aged children with obesity. The theory of planned behavior was applied as the framework of the study. Samples were late primary school-aged children aged 10-12 years old studying in two government schools in Saraburi. The participants were assigned to either the experimental group (n = 35) or the control group (n = 35) using simple random sampling. The experimental group received a plan behavior program for 6 weeks. The control group received usual care. Sedentary behavior questionnaires were used for collecting the data before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test.
The results indicated that the mean score for the sedentary behavior of the experimental group after the program was lower than on the pretest with a statistical significance (M = 24.29 , S.D. = 5.86 และ M = 32.51 , S.D. = 5.27 ; p < .01). Further, the mean score for the sedentary behavior of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group with a statistical significance (M = 24.29 , S.D. = 5.86 และ M = 31.54 , S.D. = 3.50 ; p < .01)
This study suggests that the effects of a planned behavior program are effective in terms of decreasing the sedentary behaviors of overweight late school-aged children. Consequently, nurses can use this program by coordinating with teachers and primary caregivers in order to encourage children with obesity to develop appropriate behavior.
