โรคเบาหวานชนิดที่ 1 เป็นปัญหาสาธารณสุขที่พบมากในเด็กและวัยรุ่น ผู้ป่วยเด็กที่เป็นโรคเบาหวานชนิดที่ 1 ต้องฉีดอินซูลินไปตลอดชีวิต หากควบคุมเบาหวานได้ไม่ดีก็จะเป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้เด็กเข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาลด้วยภาวะแทรกซ้อนฉุกเฉินบ่อยครั้งจากระดับน้ำตาลในเลือดต่ำหรือสูง เป้าหมายในการดูแลโรคเบาหวานชนิดที่ 1 จะช่วยป้องกันการเกิดภาวะแทรกซ้อนแบบเฉียบพลันและการเกิดภาวะแทรกซ้อนในระยะยาวในเด็กได้ โดยการควบคุมระดับน้ำตาลในเลือดให้ใกล้เคียงปกติมากที่สุด ดังนั้น ในการดูแลเด็กที่ป่วยด้วยโรคเบาหวานชนิดที่ 1 ครอบครัวจะต้องมีความรู้และความเข้าใจในหลายเรื่อง เช่น การบริหารยาอินซูลิน การรับประทานอาหาร การทำกิจวัตรประจำวัน เป็นต้น การให้ความรู้และสนับสนุนช่วยเหลือครอบครัวในการดูแลผู้ป่วยเด็กโดยใช้ครอบครัวเป็นศูนย์กลางจึงมีความสำคัญ เนื่องจากโรคเบาหวานเป็นโรคเรื้อรังที่ต้องดูแลรักษาต่อเนื่อง การรักษามีจุดประสงค์และเป้าหมายเพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้เกิดภาวะแทรกซ้อน ทำให้ผู้ป่วยเด็กมีสุขภาพดีและมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดี พยาบาลควรให้ความรู้และสร้างทักษะในการดูแลผู้ป่วยเด็กและครอบครัวจะนำไปสู่ผลการรักษาที่ดีป้องกันภาวะแทรกซ้อนต่าง ๆ ได้ ทำให้ผู้ป่วยเด็กที่เป็นโรคเบาหวานชนิดที่ 1 สามารถควบคุมระดับน้ำตาลในเลือด ป้องกันการเกิดภาวะแทรกซ้อน ลดอัตราการเข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาล ช่วยลดค่าใช้จ่ายในการรักษา รวมไปถึงการมีคุณภาพชีวิตที่ดีของเด็กอีกด้วยการดูแลผู้ป่วยเด็กโดยใช้ครอบครัวเป็นศูนย์กลางจะนำไปสู่ผลลัพธ์ด้านสุขภาพที่ดีในการดูแลผู้ป่วยและครอบครัวที่ดีขึ้น
