The Effectiveness of a Caregiver Participation Program in Managing Pediatric Thalassemia Patients During Blood Transfusion in a One-Day Blood Transfusion Clinic at Uttaradit Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aimed to 1) compare the knowledge of caregivers of pediatric thalassemia patients during blood transfusions with active participation before and after participating in the Effectiveness of a Caregiver Participation Program in Managing Pediatric Thalassemia Patients During Blood Transfusion. 2) To compare the participatory caregiving behaviors of caregivers of pediatric thalassemia patients during blood transfusions before and after participating in the program. 3) To study the satisfaction of personnel working in day-care blood transfusion clinics with the participatory care program for pediatric thalassemia patients during blood transfusion. The sample group consisted of two groups: Group 1 comprised 30 caregivers of pediatric thalassemia patients receiving day-care blood transfusions at the Pediatric Ward 3, Uttaradit Hospital. Group 2 consists of personnel involved in providing blood transfusions to patients at the day-care blood transfusion clinic, including doctors, nurses, and patient assistants, totaling 18 people. The research instruments included: 1) a program for participatory care of pediatric thalassemia patients during blood transfusions, with a content validity (CVI) of 1.0. 1) Questionnaire on knowledge regarding the care of pediatric thalassemia patients during blood transfusions. 2) Questionnaire on caregiving behaviors for pediatric thalassemia patients during blood transfusions And 4) A questionnaire on the satisfaction of personnel with the participatory care program for pediatric thalassemia patients during blood transfusions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the paired t-test.
The results found from experiment is that: 1) The groups of caregivers’ knowledge significantly increased after participating in the program, at .001. 2) Caregivers’ caregiving behavior also significantly improved after participation, at .001. 3) Healthcare personnel reported a high level of satisfaction with the program (𝒙̅=4.55, SD = .30).
This research demonstrates that this program has the potential to be a best practice in improving the quality of care for children with thalassemia in the long term. And consideration should be given to adapting or expanding its use on a wider scale so that caregivers and patients can benefit the most.
