Abstract

This quasi-experimental research with one-group pretest-posttest design aimed to examine the effects of an online breast self-examination program on breast cancer health literacy and breast cancer screening ability among village health volunteers. The sample consisted of 52 village health volunteers in Ton Muen Health Promotion Hospital, Lampang Provincial Administration Organization, Muang District, Lampang. The research instruments included: 1) an online breast self-examination program, 2) a breast cancer health literacy assessment with a reliability of 0.92, and 3) a breast cancer screening ability assessment with a reliability of 0.94. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and paired t-test.

The results revealed that: 1) After the experiment, the participants' overall breast cancer health literacy scores were significantly higher than before using program (p < .001), particularly in the areas of accessing and understanding health information which reached high levels, while appraising and applying health information remained at moderate levels. 2) After the experiment, the participants' breast cancer screening ability scores were significantly higher than before using program (p< .001).

These findings demonstrate that the online breast self-examination program was effective in developing breast cancer health literacy and breast cancer screening abilities among village health volunteers.
