Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of an Information-Motivation-Behavior Skills program on sedentary and eating behaviors among overweight early adolescents. The sample consisted of 60 overweight early adolescents aged 13 -15 years, divided into an experimental and a control group, with 30 participants in each group. The research instruments included 1) the Information-Motivation-Behavior Skills program focusing on sedentary and eating behaviors among overweight early adolescents 2) a sedentary behavior questionnaire and 3) an eating behavior questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test.

The research results revealed that the mean duration of sedentary behaviors among overweight early adolescents after receiving the program was significantly lower than before receiving the program (p<.001) and significantly lower than those who did not receive the program (p<.05). The eating behavior scores of overweight early adolescents after receiving the program were significantly higher than before receiving the program (p<.05) and significantly higher than those who did not receive the program (p<.05).

This research suggests that school health nurses can implement the Information-Motivation-Behavior Skills program as a guideline to modify health behaviors among overweight early adolescents.
