Abstract

This study is quasi-experimental research with a two-group pretest-posttest design aimed at studying effects of a self-management program on eating behaviors in adolescents with thalassemia. The sample was 40 transfusion-dependent adolescents with thalassemia aged 13-18 years at the Pediatrics Ward, Phrae Hospital, of whom 20 each were assigned to the control group and the experimental group. Research instruments consisted of: 1) the self-management program and self-management program instruments; and 2) the questionnaire on eating behaviors of transfusion-dependent adolescents with thalassemia. Content validity were tested by three experts and found to be a content validity index of .90. Instrument reliability of the questionnaire on eating behaviors was determined with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .86. Data were analyzed with descriptive, independent t-test, and paired t-test statistics.

According to the findings, transfusion-dependent adolescents with thalassemia in the experimental group had a higher overall posttest eating behavior score than the pretest score with statistical significance .05 and higher than transfusion-dependent adolescents with thalassemia who received routine care at the .05 significant level.

The findings from this study revealed use of the self-management program in transfusion-dependent adolescents with thalassemia helped patients to have appropriate eating behavior adjustments for the disease.
