Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effect of a health belief model application program on health behaviors among persons at risk of stroke in communities.  The sample consisted of 52 individuals aged 35-59 years who were at risk of stroke. They were randomly assigned into an experimental group or a control group, with 26 participants in each group. The research instruments included 1) a health belief model application program by Stretcher and Rosenstock (1997), 2) a health behavior questionnaire. The instruments were validated by six experts, yielding a content validity index of .94 and a Pearson’s correlation coefficient of .95 for reliability. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and independent t-test.

The study results showed that: 1) the experimental group had higher mean health behavior scores after participating in the health belief model application program (equation = 108.53, SD = 4.08) compared to before the program (equation = 53.65, SD = 14.38), with statistical significant (t = 18.347, p <.001) and 2) after participating in the program, the experimental group had higher mean health behavior scores (equation = 108.53, SD = 4.08) compared to the control group, which received standard care (equation = 67.11, SD = 5.63), with a statistically significant (t = 30.371, p <.001).
