Factors Influencing Health Behaviors among Nursing Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aimed at exploring health behaviors, intrinsic motivation, and life aspiration and identifying factors affecting the health behaviors among student nurses. The samples consisted of 132 student nurses, year 2-4 of the 2023 academic year. Stratified Random Sampling was used in this study. The research tools were questionnaires of health behaviors of student nurses, intrinsic motivation, and life aspiration. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were .87, .92, and .80 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis.
The results revealed that the samples had mean scores of health behaviors at a moderate level ( = 3.32, SD =.65). The mean score of intrinsic motivation was 4.81 (SD = .91), intrinsic life aspiration was 5.81 (SD = 1.10), and extrinsic life aspiration was 5.25 (SD = 1.25). The factors that affect the health behaviors of student nurses were intrinsic motivation and extrinsic life aspiration. Both variables could statistically predict health behaviors at 77.80 percent, in which intrinsic motivation factor had the highest influence (β = .710), and extrinsic life aspiration negatively influence (β = -.261).
Therefore, to promote appropriate health behaviors among student nurses, lecturers and institute should support increasing nursing students’ intrinsic motivation by providing opportunities for nursing students to experience autonomy, competence, and relationships, as well as supporting students in maintaining an appropriate balance between intrinsic and extrinsic life aspiration.
