Effect of the Individual and Family Self-Management Program on Iron Chelation Adherence Among School-aged Children with Thalassemia
Main Article Content
Abstract
This quasi-experimental research aimed to determine the effect of individual and family self-management program on iron chelation adherence among school-aged children with thalassemia. The subject were 36 school-aged children with thalassemia, aged 7-12 years, visit to the pediatric out-patient clinic in Lampang Hospital. They were purposively selected and equally divided into the experimental and control groups. The control group received normal nursing care while the experimental group received individual and family self-management program for 8 weeks. Research tools were personal data and the Thai version of the Morisky Medication Adherence Scales (MMAS- 8). The reliability (Kuder-Richardson 20) of MMAS- 8 was .82. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t–test.
The results revealed that iron chelation adherence after participating in the individual and family self-management program were significantly higher than before participation (p<.001) Additionally, iron chelation adherence after participating in the individual and family self-management program was significantly higher than that of school–aged children with thalassemia who did not participate (p<.001).
The results of this study suggest that healthcare professionals should be encouraged to implement individual and family self-management programs for school-age children with thalassemia. By using this strategy, these school-age children can effectively increase their comprehension of iron chelation and enhance their cooperative behavior.
