Abstract

This predictive relationship research aimed to study the predictive power of support from nurses; maternal preparation for taking care of preterm infants; and the attachment between mother and infant in terms of maternal participation in caring for preterm infants in a neonatal care unit. The sample group included mothers of premature infants with a gestational age of less than 37 weeks who were admitted to neonatal care units at tertiary hospitals in the southern region, with a total of 77 cases. Data were collected from July 2022 to April 2023. The research instruments included the Maternal Participation Scale in Caring for Preterm Infants in a neonatal care unit, the Support from Nurses’ Questionnaire, the Maternal Preparation for Taking Care of Preterm Infants’ Questionnaire, and the Attachment between Mother and Infant Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis.

Results revealed that the attachment between mother and infant could predict maternal participation in caring for preterm infants in the neonatal care unit at 30.2% with statistical significance (Nagelkerke R2=.302, p<.01) and was effective in predicting the accuracy of the prediction power at 66.2%.

This research suggests that nurses should promote mother-infant attachment in order to promote maternal participation in caring for preterm infants in neonatal care units.
