Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop the fall prevention model with community participation among the elderly with osteoarthritis in community. There were three phases including; 1) the situation analysis, 2) the development of fall prevention model, and 3) the model evaluation. The participants consisted of the 80 elderly people with osteoarthritis in community. They were divided into the experimental group and the control group, 40 each group. Research tools included; 1) the Severity of Knee Osteoarthritis Questionnaire, 2) Time Up and Go Test, 3) fall prevention behavior questionnaire,  and 4) Fall Prevention Model for Elderly with Osteoarthritis in the Community. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA.

The results showed that the experimental group had a significantly higher mean scores for fall prevention behavior and a significantly lower mean score for severity of knee osteoarthritis at weeks 8 and 12 after receiving the program than the control group. (p<.05) Although the fall prevention model couldn’t change the balance significantly, the experimental group improved its mean score for balance over time.

Therefore, the healthcare team should use this model continuously for decreasing the severity of knee osteoarthritis and increasing balance to prevent fall among the elderly  with knee osteoarthritis.
