The Effectiveness of The Behavior Modification in Dietary Consumption and Physical Activities for Diabetes Prevention Among Overweight Adults

Abstract

          Quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effectiveness of a behavior modification program on dietary consumption and physical activities on diabetes prevention behaviors among overweight adult females.  A total 80 women aged 35 – 59 years whose BMI over 23 kg/m2, living in the catchment areas of primary care units of Bang Kwan and Bang Toei health promoting hospitals, Muang district of Chachoengsao province were recruited. A sample were divided into  experimental and control groups, 40 for each group, equally. The research tools consisted of 1) a behavior modification program on dietary consumption and physical activities, 2) perceived health belief model 3) social supports and 4) diabetes prevention behaviors. the questionnaires were tested for reliability, using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, and the results of which were .86, .84, and .78, respectively. Data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired and independent t-tests.


          Results of the research showed that after the conclusion of the program, the mean scores of the experimental group in perceived health belief model (t = 9.73, p <.001), social supports (t = 4.34, p < .001), and overall diabetes prevention behaviors (t = - 4.22, p < .001) were statistically higher than before attending the program.; and were statistically higher those of the control group with the significant level of p<.001. The results of this research had clearly demonstrated that the behavior modification program on dietary consumption and physical activities effectively affected diabetes prevention behaviors among overweight adult females.
