Abstract

This research aims were 1) to study the university adaptation during the new normal and 2) to compare university adaptation classified by gender, hometown, monthly income, source of funds for studying, high school cumulative grade point average (GPAX), faculty, dormitory type, number of room members, history of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, the experience of COVID-19 infection, study modes, and COVID-19protective equipment availability. The sample comprised 347 first-year undergraduate students in 2022, with 283 respondents (81.56%). Data were collected online using a questionnaire developed by the researcher by sending a QR code. The statistics used for the analysis were frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent sample t-test, One-way ANOVA, and LSD (Least-Significant Difference).

The study found that the average university adaptation to the new normal after COVID-19 of first-year undergraduate students at Walailak University was high overall, and in each of the four aspects (learning, social, emotional, and activity participation) was high. The following factors show a statistically significant 0.05 for adaptation to the new normal after COVID-19:  COVID-19 protective equipment availability, dormitory air circulation (air-conditioned, fan), number of students sharing a dormitory room (2, 3, or 4), study mode (on-campus, online, on-campus with online), and income. The students with different available protective equipment for COVID-19 show different adaptations both overall and for each of the four aspects. Students living in dormitories with different circulation have different overall and emotional adaptations. Students with different numbers of roommates had different learning adaptations. Students with different study modes had different emotional adaptations.

Students with different incomes had different adaptations to activity participation. The result indicates that adaptation during the new normal of first-year undergraduate students needs to focus on COVID-19 protective equipment availability, monthly income, study mode, and number of roommates in dormitory rooms.
