Abstract

relationships between information need, social support from physicians and nurses, waiting time for surgery and preoperative anxiety. The sample was 120 of patients who had been diagnosed by the physician as cataract, glaucoma, corneal diseases and retinal diseases and undergo the local anesthesia surgery at Sapphasitprasong Hospital, Ubonratchathani. Simple random sampling was used to recruit the sample. Instruments consisted of General Information Questionnaire, Information Need Questionnaire, Social Support from Physician and Nurses Questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistic, and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficients.
The results of this study showed that the sample had moderate levels of preoperative anxiety (M = 40.90, SD = 6.35). The social support from physicians and nurses was negatively significantly related to preoperative anxiety (r = -.186, p <.05) and waiting time for surgery was positively significantly related to preoperative anxiety (r = .297, p <.01). However, information needwas not significantly related to preoperative anxiety (p >.05).
The results of this research suggested that nurses create the guidelines for lowering anxiety by enhancing social support from physicians and nurses and shorten waiting time for surgery in patients with eye surgery.
