This action research aimed to develop and evaluate a new dental caries prevention model using the AIC participatory process among elementary school students in Ban Nibong Phatthana School, Muang District of Yala Province. The research was divided into 3 phases. Phase 1 was preparatory where the problems and causes of dental caries in school-aged children were studied and analyzed. The informants were parents of 47 early elementary school children with tooth decay. Data were collected by using a questionnaire on the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of parents on preventing dental caries among school-age children. The model was developed in phase 2, through a participatory process (AIC) including 30 people: nurses in charge of school health, village health volunteers (VHVs), and municipal officials. Data were collected by using group discussions and observation form. In phase 3, the model was implemented and assessed. The sample group was 45 parents. Data were collected by using a questionnaire on the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of parents in preventing dental caries among school-aged children. There was also a parental satisfaction questionnaire on the dental caries prevention model among school-age children, tested with content validity and IOC values between 0.67 - 1.00. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-tests. Qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis.
1. The model of prevention of dental caries among school-age children relies on the participation of network partners at every step to ensure continuity. The responsible persons and activities were divided into 4 groups: 1) primary care unit 2) school 3) community, and 4) family.
2. The evaluation of the use of the model found that the parents' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in oral health care to prevent tooth decay among early elementary school students increased statistically (p-value<.001).
Therefore, this new model for caries prevention among school-age children using the AIC participatory process should be adopted and applied to other communities in order to get a form that is suitable for the context of that community.
