This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to identify the risk behaviors and the factors related with sexual intercourse among 185 upper secondary school students from a local public institution. Data were firstly collected using a questionnaire, which had the reliability 0.82, and then analyzed, using descriptive statistics and chi-square t-test. Results indicated the following.
Participants who had sexual intercourse were 22.16%. They had sexual intercourse for the first time at the age of 16 year (56.09%), with a partner who was a close friend (92.68%); most of them (97.56%) practiced safe sex by using condom (77.50%) followed by external ejaculation (12.50%). Most of them had risk behaviors when having sexual intercourse at a moderate level (58.62%), followed by the low level (25.16%), and the high level (16.22%).
Factors associated with sexual intercourse were statistically significant at 0.05 level were: 1) having close friends who have had sex (OR=9.78; 95 % CI=3.31 to 28.86; p-value<0.001), 2) drinking alcohol (OR=7.82; 95% CI=3.85 to 17.75; P-value<0.001), 3) knowledge from sex study (OR=5.49; 95 % CI=1.67-8.66; p-value=0.001), 4) having a close friend who viewed pornography (OR=4.03; 95% CI = 1.81 to 9.03; p-value<0.001), 5) sexual risk behaviors (OR=4.14; 95% CI=1.67 to 5.91; P-value=0.001), 6) having close friends who travelled to entertainment places (OR=2.90; 95% CI=1.43 to 5.91; P-value=0.003), 7) feeling self-worth (OR=2.73; 95 % CI=1.34 to 5.57; P-value=0.005), and 8) drug use (OR=2.26; 95 % CI=1.21-5.61; P-value=0.006).
Results from this study suggest that relevant departments and educators should advise students regarding practice safe sex, run a campaign about anti-alcohol consumption, as well as have role models in promoting students' self-confidence and appropriate sexual health education activities.
