This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate the effects of a nursing program on the intention of breastfeeding among postpartum teenage mothers. The program was based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The sample consisted of 60 postpartum teenage mothers who had been admitted to a tertiary hospital. Purposive sampling was used to recruit the teenage mothers, who were then assigned to an experimental group (n=30) and a control group (n=30). The control group received standard care, while the experimental group received the experimental instrument, a nursing program based on the TPB. The data-collecting instruments consisted of 1) a personal data form, 2) the Attitude Questionnaire Assessing Breastfeeding (AQAB), and 3) the Intention Questionnaire Assessing Breastfeeding (IQAB). The validity of the instruments was approved by three experts. The reliability of the AQAB and the IQAB was examined using Cronbach, s alpha coefficient, yielding values of .73 and .87, respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and independent t-test.
The result showed that: 1) postpartum teenage mothers who received the nursing program had a mean score of intention assessing breastfeeding after intervention significantly higher (M=37.57, SD=2.91) than before the intervention (M=34.33, SD=4.71) 2) postpartum teenage mothers who received the nursing program had also a mean score of intention assessing breastfeeding significantly higher (M=37.57, SD=2.91) than mothers who received standard care (M=35.97, SD=2.09)
Therefore, the program could be used to guide nursing support, so to increase breastfeeding success in postpartum teenage mothers.
