Abstract

This qualitative study from 2018 aimed to describe knowledge, know-how and wisdom of 15 folk healers in the Khlong Nam Lai district of Kampaengphet province. In-depth interview form was used. Data were compiled. Content validity index for the whole interview was evaluated with an average value of 0.90. Results showed that folk healers were in the age range from 50 to 89. Among them, 7 healers had relocated from Lampang province. Many of them had experience in the treatment of bone and ligament diseases (46.67%), massage therapy (26.64%), herbal therapy (13.31%), magical healing (13.31%), and folk medicine wisdom for more than 20 years. From this study, wisdom among bone folk Healers was specific treatment and the lack of new generation of folk healers affected the sustainability of folk medicine wisdom.Their motivations to be folk healers were that their ancestors were folk healers and thus led them to being interested in helping patients using folk medicine. The treatment processes consisted of folk medicine practices and superstitious beliefs, which focused on physical and mental healing and folk medicine wisdom is related to Thai traditional medicine, such as general massage (Cha-loi-sak), and traditional medicines. However, the lack of new generation of folk healers affected the sustainability of folk medicine wisdom. From this study, our suggestion is that the knowledge and folk medicine wisdom should be maintained and preserved. The awareness to sustain the knowledge and folk medicine wisdom should be raised among people in the community.
