Model of Health Promotion Activities in a School for the Elderly Using 3 Dimensions (Diet, Exercise, and Emotion)

This research and development study aimed to: 1) study the needs of elderly in terms of health activities based on the 3 dimensions model (Diet, Exercise, and Emotion), 2) create a health promotion model, and 3) evaluate the effectiveness of the model. The study was divided into 2 phases: 1) the development process, and 2) the evaluation process. Focus group discussion was conducted among 85 informants in the school of elderly of Yupo Subdistrict, Mueang District of Yala Province. Research instrument for phase 1 was a semi-structured interview form on the elderly’s health needs in terms of diet, exercise and emotion (the 3 dimensions). Content analysis was used for data analysis. Model was then validated by 5 experts. The research instrument for phase 2 was an evaluation form on the effectiveness of the model. Data were analyzed by average and standard deviation.
The research found the following.
1. The needs expressed by the elderly for health activities, following the 3 principles, included 27 activities (7 in diet, 9 in exercise, and 11 in emotion).
2. Activities included in the model were as follows: 1) activities about diet focused on knowledge, such as anti-aging diet, food for excretion, brain nourishment and non-toxic food; 2) activities about exercise focused on physical activity skills such as Baslob dance, folk sports, Manives, nine-square table, Hula-hoop, aerobic dance, arms swinging, and yoga, as well as; 3) activities about emotions focused on spiritual growth, and making good relationship with others such as karaoke singing, dancing, local dance, cooking, singing Folk music, excursions, group activities, meditation, and gardening.
3. The model evaluation revealed that overall, the model was rated at a high level (M=4.80, SD=0.20).
Based on this research, the model can promote health for the elderly.
