Abstract

This quasi-experimental research (two-group pre-posttest design) aimed to: 1) compare    knowledge of eye care between groups of students, 2) compare their confidence in eye care   skills, 3) do an assessment of the skills needed for wiping the eye correctly, and 4) study the students' satisfaction with a video media on eye care. Sample was 66 nursing students in their third year at Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nakhon Ratchasima. Sample was divided into control group and experimental group. The tool used in the experiment was a video about eye care. The tools used to collect data included: 1) a knowledge test on eye care, 2) an assessment form for confidence in eye care, 3) an eye care skills test, and 4) the student satisfaction evaluation form with the video. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was used to test reliability of research instruments, and obtained values of .90 and .82, respectively. The knowledge test on eye care also was tested (p=.41, r=.56). Data were analyzed by comparing knowledge scores on eye care, confidence in eye care between the experimental and control group, before and after the experiment, using Paired t-test statistics. Knowledge scores on eye care and confidence in eye care were compared between the experimental group and the control group using Independent t-test statistics.  Students’ satisfaction scores were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

The research found that: 1) the group that was taught using the video had an average score regarding knowledge higher than the control group with a statistical significance level of .05 (t=-2.472); 2) the group that was taught using the video had a higher average score of  confidence in the practice of eye care with a statistical significance level of .05 (t=2.833); 3) the group that was taught using the video had a higher average score of eye care skill with a statistical significance level of .05 (t=-8.321); 4) the overall satisfaction of both groups in terms of content,  and quality aspect were 4.48 (SD=.37), and 4.43 (SD=.35) over 5, respectively.

The findings suggest that teachers should develop video media in accordance with learning needs of students, and their interests. So students can use video media for self-study that will further help them to gain knowledge, confidence, and practical skills.
