Abstract

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of a resilience enhancement program using Line video call for depression and Resilience in adult patients with mild to moderate major depressive disorder (MDD).

Material and Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study in outpatient adults aged 20 – 59 years mild-to-moderate (Patients Health Questionnaire; PHQ9 scored 7 – 18) MDD patients from the Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry, Bangkok, Thailand from August 2022 - August 2023. Control (24) and experimental (24) groups were allocated equally via simple random sampling. All patients (48) received MDD severity and Resilience quotient (RQ) assessment at study entry. The experiment group received a 5-week online Edith Grotberg's strategy resilience enhancement program and the next 4 weeks of follow-up, while the control group received a 9-week follow-up. The PHQ9 and RQ were then assessed in posttest immediately and posttest 1-month. A repeated ANOVA and independent t-test were used to compare the PHQ9 and RQ intra-group and between groups, respectively.

Results: The PHQ9 and RQ at the study entry did not differ. In the experiment group, the PHQ9 and RQ changed significantly on posttest immediately and 1-month. In the control group, the PHQ9 and RQ only changed significantly on the posttest immediately. The PHQ9 and RQ in the experiment group were lower and significantly higher than the control group on posttest 1-month.

Conclusion: The 5-week online application Line Video Call Edith Grotberg's strategy resilience enhancement program effectively decreased MDD severity and enhanced Resilience for outpatient adult mild to moderate severity MDD patients.
