DAY HOSPITAL IN THE TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION OF PSYCHIATRIC PATIENTS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to review and analyze evidence of Day hospital in the treatment and rehabilitation with activities of psychiatric patients.

Material and Methods: This was a systematic review that searched and selected all studies conducted in human in the English language published between 2000 and 2020 from PubMed, Embase and Ovid.

Results: Of the 3,214 studies found, 31 met the inclusion criteria; they consist of 12 articles on the use of Day hospital for the treatment and rehabilitation for schizophrenia, 7 for mood disorders and 12 for any psychiatric disorder. Most therapeutic activities reported were 1) psychotropic medications, 2) individual psychotherapy, 3) group psychotherapy, 4) recreation, 5) occupational therapy, 6) social skills training, 7) psychoeducation and 8) art therapy.

Conclusion: Most treatment and rehabilitation activities of psychiatric patients incorporated for Day hospital were similar group or individual psychotherapy, recreation, social skills training and psychoeducation that combined with psychotropic medications. These activities within the Day hospital setting were shown to reduce psychopathology, reduced a hospital readmission, and enable people with psychiatric disorders to live happily.
