THE EFFECT OF THE EXISTENTIAL GROUP COUNSELING PROGRAM ON THE BURDEN AMONG CAREGIVERS FOR ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA

Objectives: To compare the burden among caregivers of elderly patients with schizophrenia before and after received existential group counseling and to compare the burden among caregivers of elderly patients with schizophrenia who received existential group counseling and those who received regular caring activities.
Material and Methods: This was a quasi-experimental research. The participants were caregivers of elderly patients with schizophrenia at Geriatric Clinic, Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry. They were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group, 15 subjects in each group. The experimental group received existential group counseling while the control group received treatment as usual. Research instruments comprised the existential group counseling program, personal information questionnaires, and the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI).
Results: After participating, the score of Zarit Burden Interview of the experimental group was significantly lower than before (p-value = 0.007). And the score of Zarit Burden Interview of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p-value = 0.009).
Conclusion: The existential group counseling program can reduce burden on caregivers of older schizophrenia patients. Therefore, nurses and relevant health personnel could focus on the caregiver to reduce caregiver burden.
