Quality of life among professional nurses in Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry

Abstract

Objective  :  To identify the level of quality of life among nurses in Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry

Material and Method  :  A descriptive study included all nurses in Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry during December 2018- January 2019. The instruments comprised of demographic data, and and World Health Organisation’s Quality of Life in Thai version. Statistics used for data analysis were frequency and percentage.

Results  : Total of 164 nurses agreed to take part in this study (100%). The sample aged ≥ 39 years old was 53.1%. Most had a bachelor of nursing degree, single, no child were 52.4%, 48.2 % and 64.0%. 75% of nurses worked in nursing practice roles and 53.7% had more than 10 years experience. 70.7% of them worked in shift duties and on the ward. 68.3% had no underlying diseases; and their physical activity was 70.7. Their monthly salaries ranged from 20,000 to 40,000 baht. The overall quality of life of 68.3 nurses was at the moderate level. The scores of the quality of life of environmental domains was at the highest level with 99.4%; while physical and psychological dimensions were at moderate level with 87.8%. The suggestions for improving the quality of work life among professional nurses in Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry were the top 3 supportive assistance needs.  It was found as follows: 1) the most of  Housing welfare, compensation welfare, shuttle fee welfare: 7.3% 2)  Followed by mental and physical health promotion: 6.1% 3) Environment: 4.5%.

Conclusion  : The study findings could be utilized as the baseline data and to support appropriate welfare, in order to improve and maintain the standard of the quality of the work life in the organization.
