The effectiveness of telephone-based motivational interviewing on people with gambling problem

Objective: To develop Telephone-based Motivational Interviewing Program and to compare duration
of gambling, amount of funds, severity of problem gambling, level of motivation and readiness to stop
gambling before and after the program.
Material and Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental research by using one-group pretestposttest
design. Samples were 23 individuals who called gambling helpline 1323 for gambling problem.
Research Instruments are telephone-based Motivational Interviewing Program (single session), Problem
Gambling Severity Index (PGSI), Questionnaire of duration of gambling, readiness to stop gambling, level
of motivational and demographic questionnaire. Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used for data analysis.
Results: The study showed that after receiving Telephone-based Motivational Interviewing Program, the
participants have significantly lower average days reduced from 20 days to 0 day (p < 0.01), funds spent
on gambling reduced from 30,000 Bath to 0 Baht (p < 0.01), and the severity of the activity reduced from
21 scores to 3 scores (p < 0.01). Participants also have significantly increased level of motivation from 3
level to 4 level (p < 0.01) and readiness to stop gambling increased from 9 scores to 10 scores (p = 0.02).
Conclusion: The study showed that the telephone-based Motivational Interviewing Program help
reducing gambling related behavior.
