EFFECT OF USING PRIMARY NURSINGMODEL THAT INTEGRATED KING’s NURSING THEORY FOR SCHIZOPHRENIC PATIENTS ON THERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION ASPERCEIVED BY PROFESSIONAL NURSES

Abstract

Objective: To compare the perceived of therapeutic communication of professional nurses before and after using a primary nursing model that integrated King’s Nursing theory.

Material and Method: This study comprised of 30 nurses that were selected by using a purposive sampling according to inclusion criteria and then were divided into 2 groups: the experimental and control group with 15 nurses each. The instrument for intervention was the primary nursing model integrated with King’s Nursing Theory for Schizophrenic patients. The tool for data collection was the perceived of therapeutic communication of professional nurses questionnaire which was reviewed by 3 experts for content validity. The content validity index was 0.86 and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.83. For data analysis, the frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation were utilized. For comparison between experimental and control group with the statistics of Mann-Whitney U Test and for comparison before and after experimental group with the statistics of Wilcoxon Singed-Ranks Test.

Results: The results found that: 1) the perceived of therapeutic communication of professional nurses in the intervention group was higher than those in the control group at significant level of 0.05; 2) the perceived of communication of professional nurses in the intervention group after the intervention was higher than before the intervention at significant level of 0.05.

Conclusion: The primary nursing model that integrated King’s Nursing theory is considered as the therapeutic instrument for increasing awareness of the therapeutic communication in professional nurses. Therefore, it is recommended that administrators could support this intervention for improving quality of nursing care continuously.
