Abstract

Objective: Study performed to assess the relationship between duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) and  treatment  outcomes  by  evaluating  number  and  duration  of  re-hospitalizations  along  with  dosage  of  antipsychotic  drugs  in  patients  with  schizophrenia  at  Somdet  Chaopraya  institute  of  psychiatry  that  continuously followed up for 3 years.

Material and Method: This retrospective cohort study obtained data from clinical records of patients with schizophrenia diagnosed in first hospital admission at Somdet Chaopraya institute of psychiatry in 2009, 2010 and 2011 who continuously followed up for 3 years in total number of 62 cases. Afterwards, the comparison of treatment outcomes between patients with short (≤ 6 months) and long (> 6 months) DUP was performed. Percentage, mean, SD and Fisher’s exact test were used as statistical analysis.

Results: Of all 62 samples, 45 cases had long DUP and 17 patients were in the group of short one. Mean duration of untreated psychosis was 38.96  ±  50.24  months.  For treatment  outcomes,  DUP  correlated  significantly  with  number  and  duration  of  re-hospitalizations.  91.2  %  of  the  long  DUP  group  had  no  re-hospitalization, 41.2% of the short DUP group had no re-hospitalization and 91.1% of the long DUP group  of  duration  of  re-hospitalizations  that  not  exceeded  than  20  days  and  64.7%  for  the  short  DUP  group.

Conclusion: DUP had significant  correlation  with  number  and  duration  of  re-hospitalizations.  Our  results which found that samples in long DUP group had more favorable treatment outcomes may need further researches because of their difference from previous studies.
