CHARACTERISTIC OF OLDER PATIENT WITH PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER IN INPATIENT WARD AT SOMDET CHAOPRAYA INSTITUTE OF PSYCHIATRY

Objectives: To examine the characteristic of older people (age > 60 years) with psychiatric disorders at inpatient ward at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry.
Material and Methods: The retrospective study was conducted on older people with psychiatric disorders who admitted to the institute from January 1st, 2019 to December 31st, 2020. Demographic data and clinical characteristic information were collected and analyzed to ascertain percentage, mean, median, and standard derivate (SD).
Results: The total of the older people (age > 60) with psychiatric disorders admitted to the inpatient ward (IPD) at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry between 1st January 2019 and 31st December 2020 were 557 patients. Half of them were female (56.4%). The median age of the sample was 65 years and 38.1% of the patients were not married. Moreover, 60.3% of the sample had the principal diagnosis was schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorder (F20-F29 of ICD-10) and most of the sample (88.7%) had more than one comorbid medical illness. 70.7% of the sample used universal coverage (UC). The average length of hospital stay was 31 days. and the median cost of hospital admission was 35,433.25 Baht per admission.
Conclusion: Most of the older people with psychiatric disorders at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry had schizophrenia as the principal diagnosis. 4 of 5 had more than one comorbid medical illness. The findings of this research may help the geriatric team to develop a suitable recovering program for the patients at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry.
