Results of Participatory Action Research on Physical and Mental Health Development to Elderly in Tonpao Municipality, Chiang Mai

Abstract

          Tonpao Municipality, Chiang Mai is entering into an aging society with a proportion of the proportion of aging population by 16.8 percent and 9.3 percent of those are dependency with chronic diseases. Meanwhile, the municipality is still lack of information related to mental health assessment in older persons. The objective of this study was to compare holistic health before and after receiving the intervention to promote physical and mental health based on the concept of participatory action research (PAR). The research samples were 351 older persons and the research instrument consisted of 1) the activities for developing physical and mental well-being in accordance with the actual demand of the community that passed community agreement and community participation and 2) a holistic health assessment form divided into 2 parts as a physical health assessment form based on the assessment of activity of daily living ability (ADL) and mental health assessment (9Q). The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of the questionnaire was 0.81. The results showed the mean age was 70 years (SD = 8). The most common chronic disease was hypertension (50.5%). Most of the participants had good physical health status. Most of them (96.3%) demonstrated high ability to perform basic activities of daily living. After the intervention, ADL score significantly increased (p = .01). Moreover, 9Q score was also significantly decreased (p ≤ .05) after the intervention given.
        In conclusion, most of the participants living in Tonpao Municipality, Chiang Mai had a good holistic health including physical and mental well-being. The intervention with community participation indicates a potential activities to improve holistic health of the elderly.
