Effects of a Self-Management Program Combined with Family Support on Self-Management Behaviors for Chronic Kidney Disease Progression Delay and Glomerular Filtration Rate Among Patient with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3, Hang Chat District, Lampang Province

Abstract

         This quasi-experimental study employed a one-group pretest–posttest design to compare self-management behaviors for slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) among patients with stage 3 CKD before and after participation in a 12-week self-management promotion program combined with family support. The sample consisted of 33 patients with stage 3 CKD attending the chronic disease clinic at Hang Chat Hospital, Lampang Province. Participants were selected using simple random sampling by lottery without replacement. Data were collected using a self-management behavior questionnaire designed for patients with stage 3 CKD. The instrument’s content validity was established by a panel of experts, yielding a content validity index of 0.88, and its reliability was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.82. Data analysis included descriptive statistics and paired-samples t-test.
         The results revealed that the mean score of self-management behaviors for slowing CKD progression after participation in the program was significantly higher than before participation (p < .05). Although the post-intervention eGFR showed an increasing trend compared to the pre-intervention level, the difference was not statistically significant (p > .05). These findings suggest that the self-management promotion program combined with family support should be implemented to enhance patients’ and families’ knowledge, skills, and participation in decision-making. The program also encourages patients to consider appropriate self-care options and exercise autonomy in managing their condition within their own context. Such improvements in self-management behaviors may contribute to better renal function and improved quality of life among patients with stage 3 CKD.
