Factors Associated with Risk Behaviors of Stroke among Hypertensive Patients in Thung Chai Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital, Uthumporn Phisai District, Sisaket Province

Patients with hypertension are at increased risk of stroke, which remains a major cause of disability and mortality in Thailand. Effective blood pressure control in accordance with prescribed treatment plans through consistent adherence to lifestyle modification and antihypertensive medication can significantly reduce the risk of stroke and related complications. This study aimed to examine stroke risk behaviors among patients with hypertension and to identify factors associated with these behaviors at Thung Chai Sub-district Health Promotion Hospital, Uthumphorn Phisai District, Sisaket Province. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 180 hypertensive patients selected by simple random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires assessing personal factors, knowledge about stroke and stroke risk behaviors, perceptions of stroke warning signs and management, perceptions of stroke risk factors, and stroke risk behaviors. The reliability of the instruments, as measured by Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, was .915, .919, and .780, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
The results indicated that overall stroke risk behaviors were at a low level (Mean = 1.97, S.D. = 0.54). Factors significantly associated with stroke risk behaviors included personal factors such as occupation (p = .019) and prior learning experiences related to stroke (p < .001). Predisposing factors included the level of knowledge about stroke (p < .001), while enabling factors included the type of healthcare facility utilized and smoking behavior (p < .001). Conclusion and Recommendations: Knowledge regarding stroke prevention was identified as a key factor influencing stroke risk behaviors among patients with hypertension. Therefore, healthcare professionals in community health centers should continuously implement educational interventions emphasizing quit smoking, dietary modification, and regular physical activity to reduce stroke risk in this population.
