Community Participation, Knowledge, and Self-Care Behaviors among Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Pichai Sub-district, Mueang Lampang District, Lampang Province

Abstract

          This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to examine community participation, the levels of diabetes-related knowledge, and self-care behaviors among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Pichai Subdistrict, Mueang Lampang District, Lampang Province. The study population consisted of 110 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 34 community stakeholders involved in community-based diabetes care. Data were collected using questionnaires with content validity indices ranging from 0.67 to 1.00. The diabetes knowledge questionnaire demonstrated a Kuder–Richardson 20 (KR-20) reliability coefficient of 0.88, while the self-care behavior and community participation questionnaires yielded Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.91 and 0.89, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation.
         The findings revealed that overall community participation was at a high level (Mean= 3.88, S.D. = 0.69), with participation in implementation receiving the highest mean score. The overall level of diabetes-related knowledge among patients was high (Mean= 41.20 , S.D. = 4.10), although knowledge regarding dietary control was at a moderate level. Overall self-care behaviors were also at a high level (Mean = 3.74, S.D.= 0.53), with medication adherence and attendance at follow-up appointments receiving the highest scores, whereas physical activity remained at a moderate level. (Mean = 3.21 , S.D.= 0.64) The findings may provide baseline information for planning health promotion activities and developing community-based diabetes care systems in primary healthcare settings.
